Malone University will go to NCAA Division 2

Malone University Receives Official Approval For NCAA Div. II Membership

Release Date: July 12, 2010

Malone University athletics has officially been granted approval for membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Div. II, the University’s athletic director Charlie Grimes announced today.

A current and long-time member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Malone will still hold NAIA membership for the next two years (2010-11 and 2011-12) and will also be in its first two (of three) years of exploratory membership with NCAA Div. II. Malone will be eligible for NAIA postseason competition for the 2010-11 season. After 2010-11 and 2011-12, Malone will hold its third and final year of NCAA Div. II exploratory membership in the 2012-13 year. In that year, Malone will no longer be a member of the NAIA and will also not yet be eligible for NCAA Div. II postseason competition. Malone will be a full member of NCAA Div. II beginning in the fourth year (2013-14).

Malone currently offers 20 intercollegiate sports, the most of any AMC institution. These include football, volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis.

Grimes is pleased that the NCAA has deemed Malone a worthy candidate for membership. “Malone is deeply committed to providing student-athletes with the highest level of competition and support to enhance their educational experience,” said Grimes. “We are very excited to take our “Christ’s Kingdom First” mission and place it on the NCAA stage. This three-year transition will be challenging, but our athletic department is energized by the process, and our fine student-athletes are well worth the effort.”
